Dave’s Faves – the first of 2012: Lawson-Menzies Quarterly Auction

Can you believe it … after the break, fine art auctions are well and truly back on the agenda.

The year is kicked off this Thursday, 23 February, by Lawson-Menzies at their Kensington premises in Sydney. We attended the opening on Wednesday and had the opportunity to pre-inspect all 314 works on offer.

David has of course made his very personal selection and comments on 20 of the works to go under the hammer.

Lot 10 – Adam Cullen, Ned Kelly 1880, est. $8,000-12,000. Don’t shoot me – Adam.
Lot 23 – Fred Williams, Trapeze 1955-56, est. $2,500-3,500. Try and find another one!
Lot 24 – Fred Williams, Windmill Girls 1955-56, est. $2,500-3,500. Connoisseur print collectors will be scrambling
Lot 31 – Bertram MacKennal, Circe 1893, est. $10,000-15,000. Brilliant bronze beauty
Lot 38 – Dale Frank, Untitled 2007, est $12,000-16,000. If I could eat a painting, it would have to be a Dale Frank.
Lot 42 – Eugene von Guerard, (Red Sea Landscape) c 1885, est. $25,000-35,000. Nothing to prove

Lot 43 – Arthur Streeton, Venetian Scene, est. $16,000-22,000. Are you serious – NO RESERVE?! I expect these gondolas to fly

Lot 47 – Lawrence Starkey, Riding the Line – Last Chukka, est. $ 10,000-15,000. Probably a better investment than horses this one.
Lot 97 – Norman Lindsay, Playing Hookey 1894, est. $1,200-1,800. More innocent times perhaps
Lot 109 – Craig Waddell, Kenny’s Toy 2004, est. $4,000-6,000. A Big Red Tractor for Dad
Lot 128 – Fred Leist, Twilight 1906, est. $2,000-3,000. Take a closer look – enchanting, if overframed
Lot 142 – Dick Roughsey, The sound of the Rainbow snake, Mornington Island, est. $2,500-3,500. Restore, Reframe, Relish
Lot 144 – Minnie Pwerle, Awelye Atnwengerrp 2005, est. $ 5,000-7,000. Brighten your day
Lot 157 – Nicholas Blowers, Narcissus # 4, 2005, est. $ 2,500-4,000. Blows me away
Lot 183 – Lisa Roet, Monkey baby 2005, est. $6,000-9,000. One of Australia’s most formidable sculptors
Lot 192 – Russell Drysdale, Study for the Rabbiters, est. $3,000-5,000. Look, look and you shall find
