Bonhams present a tight offering of 67 lots of Australian and aboriginal art in their upcoming auction on 12 May in Sydney.
As usual, David didn’t find it difficult to choose ten paintings for the ‘Dave’s Faves’:
Lot 1 – Roy de Maistre, Berrima, 1918, est. $25,000-35,000. Roy’s experiment with colour pays off
Lot 4 – John Brack, Gerberas, 1957, est. $150,000-250,000. Brack is back
Lot 5 – Jeffrey Smart, Second Study for The Picnic 2, 1969, est. $50,000-80,000. “I remember when this was all fields”
Lot 6 – Arthur Streeton, Still Life with Lillies, c1933, est. $60,000-80,000. Missed out on the Brack? This is nice, too
Lot 7 – Sidney Nolan, Central Australia, c.1949, est. $45,000-65,000. If you are going to buy a Nolan, buy one like this
Lot 17 – Colin McCahon, Black, White and Orange Landscape, 1958, est. $30,000-40,000. Australia has always welcomed Kiwis. Don’t let this one fly back to N.Z.
Lot 19 – Dale Frank, Baffling Bad Temper, 2012, est. $28,000-32,000. See more of Dale’s mesmerising psychedelics at the Adelaide Biennial
Lot 20 – Robert Klippel, Opus 97, 1960, est. $25,000-35,000. The highest form of recycling
Lot 44 – Julie Dowling, Cousin Ray, 2003, est. $2,000-3,000. Julie’s prices at auction are on the rise again
Lot 58 – William Robinson, Untitled, c.1985, est. $5,000-7,000. I just like it.
