The importance of this painting is hard to underestimate: it is the only known portrait of American painter Dodge Macknight in existence. It was painted by eminent Australian impressionist John Peter Russell in the same year he portrayed Vincent Van Gogh (this painting is held in the Van Gogh museum collection).
VALUATION & OUTCOME:
We represented the descendants of William Dodge Macknight in the sale of this portrait, which was located in the US.
We established the value and returned the painting to Australia, and brokered the sale through a first tier Australian auctioneer, selling it for $ 228,000 including buyer’s premium. At the time of its sale, “Portrait of William Dodge Macknight” received extensive publicity nationwide.
Subsequently, the work has been illustrated in John McDonald’s “History of Australian Art” and was exhibited at the National Gallery of Australia.
