John Peter Russell - Portrait of William Dodge Macknight, c 1887, 55 x 47 cm
To represent the family of William Dodge Macknight in the sale of this work was an honour for Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants.
The importance of this painting is hard to underestimate: it is the
only known portrait of American painter Dodge Macknight in existence
and painted by John Peter Russell in the same year he portrayed Vincent
Van Gogh (this work is located in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam).
Estimated at $ 200,000 to $ 250,000, it sold for $ 228,000
including buyer’s premium on 29 August 2007 with Deutscher and Hackett. The previous highest price for a portrait by
J.P. Russell at auction was “Madame Russell aux Amandiers”, sold with
Christies in 1997 for $ 90,500.
Rah Fizelle - Seated Woman, 1932-33, 80 x 52.5 cm.
Acting for the family of the artist in the sale of this previously
unknown portrait, estimated at $ 45,000 to $ 65,000, this beautiful typical work of the modernist artist sold for $ 93,000 including buyer's premium in August 2007, setting a new auction record for works by Rah Fizelle.
Estate of the late Max Germaine: Banziger Hulme were entrusted with brokering the sale of select works from the estate of Max Germaine, who is most notably known for his encyclopedia on Artists and Galleries in Australia. Works by David Boyd, Adrian Feint (illustrated) and a juvenilia work by the young Grace Cossington-Smith found new homes appreciative of the superb provenance.
Robert Boyed Mitchell: This is an artist whose work deserves to be more widely known and accessible to all. One of the ways now is through www.robertmitchellartist.com.au
which Banziger Hulme have designed and built in collaboration with the artist’s
family. The website pays tribute to a great artist and showcases the
talent that developed into a unique voice in art expressing the joy of
life.
Albert Namatjira - "Rapid Creek, Darwin"
Thisextremely
rare painting by Albert Namatjira, the "father" of the Hermannsburg artists, is one of
only three paintings known to be in existence of his brief time in
Darwin; it dates from 1950. After extensive research to establish these facts, we sold the outstanding work on behalf of our client.
Collection of over 20 Australian paintings from the early 20th Century
The collection, containing works by Emmanuel Phillips Fox, James R. Jackson, Lionel Lindsay, Herbert Gallop, Arthur Burgess, was recognised by Banziger Hulme Fine Art. We helped the owner sell the works in the most appropriate environment, ensuring a return that exceeded the expectations of the owner by far who had paid $50 at a garage sale for the works.
John Perceval – “London Bridge, Portsea”, 1957
We returned this significant painting by this Australian master from Spain to Australia and achieved $ 225,000 for the work. This was $120,000 more than other estimates the owner received.
Gilbert Wilkinson
This collection of 30 lovely gouache works by the English cartoonist was sold in collaboration with Martin Gallon International Art, Melbourne.
E.T. Compton – “Blue and Gold”
We researched this significant mountain scape and found in London the gallery which specialises in the sales of this genre of painting, and achieved substantially more for the client than he was originally quoted in Australia.
Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith Memorabilia
This rare collection of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith memorabilia contained a watercolour painting by John Allcot of the Southern Cross, a collection of photographs of Kingsford-Smith and other renowned aviators, aviation maps and books, newspaper articles and medals.
The whole collection was acquired by the National Museum of Australia, Canberra.
Ruth Faerber Collection
Renowned printmaker and “paperworker” Ruth Faerber decided to donate her entire collection of over 160 of her own artworks through the Cultural Gifts Program to national and regional art galleries, documenting the development of her style of working with paper over a 50 year career.
The unique collection was accepted by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
Elaine Coghlan Collection
Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants recognised the importance of a lifetime’s work, kept in three suitcases by the niece of the artist, and successfully brokered the sale through Bonhams & Goodman.
Roy De Maistre
This unsigned work by the Australian cubist painter had an excellent provenance. We were able to have the painting authenticated and this authentication increased the value significantly for the sale.
John Constable
We had the two pencil drawings, supposedly by Australian Impressionist Frederick McCubbin, restored for the owner. The back revealed the secret: the works were signed by John Constable, and the works are now thought to be by the great English master.
H. Hepburn Calvert - Rare Birds Fly
The set of ten watercolours of Australian birds is as fresh as the day the artist created them - a very rare find indeed. We brokered the sale of these pristine works through Davidson Auctions, Sydney. These
superb examples of Calvert’s watercolours of birds achieved just under
$ 40,000 (including buyer’s premium) - a result which is more than double
the top estimate of $ 18,000 and set new records for the artist.
Sidney Long
Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants brokered the sale of this sparkling work by Sid Long with a very good result for the client.
Dutch portrait painting, 17th century
The beautifully executed work was placed with an auction house in London for further research into its origin and the painter.
Elioth Gruner
Brokerage of successful sale through a renowned auction house in Australia.
A collection of Old Master Prints
We advised the owner on how to best proceed with the sale of the over 30 prints and brokered a very successful sale through auction in Australia.
