Widow of the artist to authenticate paintings by D’Arcy Doyle

Recently, there has been quite a lot of adverse publicity regarding the authenticity of paintings by D’Arcy Doyle. The artist’s widow has naturally been very concerned with her husband’s reputation, and many owners of works do not know anymore whom or what to believe when it comes to the authenticity of the paintings in their homes.

To address and set right these uncertainties, Jennefer Doyle will personally authenticate D’Arcy Doyle’s original works in conjunction with Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants in Manly on 27th March 2009.

We have had calls from many concerned owners of D’Arcy Doyle paintings, and they just want to be reassured of the authenticity of their works.

Mrs Doyle has already authenticated a large number of works for the fine art auction house Bonhams and Goodman, and we felt it would be important to assist the many individual owners of his works as well so they can get peace of mind.

This is a one-off opportunity for owners of works by D’Arcy Doyle, as Jennefer Doyle will only authenticate works ‘in the flesh’ and will fly specifically to Sydney from Queensland for the day only.

Visit D'Arcy Doyle for more information and all details.

Annual Art Appraisal Day at Banziger Hulme Fine Art on
Saturday, 21 February 2009

You always wanted to find out, but were afraid to ask whether your treasured family painting is really worth something. Well, now is the time to ask the experts at their free annual art appraisal day in Manly.

It will be held on

Saturday, 21 February 2009
10 am to 2 pm
Level 1, 51-53 The Corso

All are welcome to bring in an artwork or a photo of it. We will assist in finding out whether you have a truly valuable piece or a treasured family artwork which may still hold still sentimental or historical value. You can also find out whether reframing or conserving will bring your art back to life.

The art appraisals cover all Australian and international works of art, including oil paintings, watercolours, limited edition prints, etchings, photographs and sculpture.

We run our art appraisal days regularly throughout the state, and every time an exciting work of art turns up. Recently, we discovered this significant painting by Australian impressionist painter Albert Henry Fullwood (1863 – 1930) Newport. It is a previously unknown painting of a Tasmanian windmill from 1897, measuring an impressive
61 x 122 cm. The owner decided on our advice to have his valuable work fully restored and conserved.

International enquiries for valuations from people who own Australian art overseas are also frequent – a recent example is the valuation of major work by John Coburn we did for the owner in Texas. The owner paid $US 45 for the work in an op-shop; we valued it at $ 30,000 for insurance. The Sydney Morning Herald published the story in its issue of 4th November 2008.

Lines of Fire - Armed Forces to Art School

The National Art School (NAS) presents in July and August 2008 an exhibition celebrating the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme students at the NAS from 1944.  Lines of Fire is an exhibition bringing together two worlds that seem completely opposed: the constraints of army life and the creative freedom of the artists' life.

The two-part show exhibits work by artists who trained at the National Art School through the CRTS grant scheme following their service in the World War II. Many of them went on to contribute in major ways to Australian art history. Amongst others, works and material by Guy Boyd, John Coburn, Bert Flugelman, Roy Fluke, Robert Klippel, Robert Mitchell and Tony Tuckson are on show.

On from 10 July to 13 August 2008, at the Gallery, National Art School, Forbes Street, Darlinghurst, Sydney, Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm

Speakers will be announced in the coming weeks. Registration fee for non-IAPMA members is $ 396, for IAPMA members $ 297.

More information and registration forms are available on http://www.iapmacongress2009.com.au

The Congress is organised by Creative Paper Tasmania, a papermaking studio founded in 1992 in Burnie, the Tasmanian papermaking town. The studio uses traditional methods dating back to first century China, producing ecologically sound paper from recycled cotton and native Tasmanian plant fibres. Their website is www.creativepapertas.com.au

A whole range of exhibitions in various locations will be held throughout Burnie. Confirmed today are “New Paper, Old Land” with works by IAPMA members, “My Paper, My Land”, a postcard exhibition organised by Paper Makers of Victoria, paper sculptures by Pam Thorne and Ruth Rees, an honorary exhibition for Charles Turner, former paper chemist at Burnie Pulp Mill and handmade paper maker, and a show of works by renowned Australian paper artist Ruth Faerber at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery.

Burnie City Council organises a paper festival for the Tasmanian Arts Biennial “Ten Days on the Island” which coincides with the IAPMA Congress, and is also sponsoring the (acquisitive) Burnie Print Prize with a prize pool of $ 13,000. The prize is open to Australian residents, closing in late 2008 and exhibited during the IAPMA conference.

International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists IAPMA on http://www.iapma.info

IAPMA today is an international organisation with over 450 members in 41 countries: artists, paper makers, scientists, conservators, educators from schools and universities, museum officials and people interested in and fascinated by paper in the broadest sense. The association was founded in 1986 by Fred Siegenthaler of Switzerland, when paper as an art medium was far less well-known than it is today.

With paper and communication as its underlying basis, the main objective of the Association is to facilitate and encourage an international exchange of ideas and to share information about hand papermaking. IAPMA aims to provide the opportunity and inspiration for members to work together, to share solutions to technical problems, to explore different cultural backgrounds and approaches to papermaking.

Want to know what your art might be worth?

Come and see us at our obligation-free appraisal on Thursday, 11 October 2007, from 2 - 5 pm, in our office on level 1, 51-53 The Corso, Manly.

The next fine art auctions are now announced for November and December, with consignments closing in the next couple of weeks.

The appraisal day is open to anyone who would like an honest, independent and confidential opinion on the sale potential of their art without any obligations.

Using a knowledgeable art broker in selling art has many advantages: better market information and more options, no time-consuming arrangements for pick-up, drop-off and paperwork, no up-front fees on consigning works (for example for photography, insurance or handling), and discretion with regards to the auction house, if required – and a higher success rate.

We achieved a 100 % clearance rate on the works consigned for our clients in the spring fine art sales – usually, 70% is considered a good industry result. If you prefer, send us an email to find out about the potential of your artwork.

Manly Arts Festival 2007

Art Appraisal Day on 13 September at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, West Esplanade

Come and see us between 4 pm and 7 pm for a free appraisal of your artwork - be it a painting, limited edition print or photo. Bring in the work or a photo to have appraised. Artworks do not always have to command extraordinary monetary value, yet the historical or sentimental value can be just as important.

Raising Funds for the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Programme:

Rotary Club Manly organises Appraisal Day on 14 July for a Good Cause

All too often we see in the press and on TV the tragedy of young inexperienced drivers involved in horrifying car accidents. The younger the driver the greater the risk of being involved in a serious car accident. That is why Rotary set up the Rotary Youth Rider Awareness Programme (RYDA) in 2000. It educates new young drivers comprehensively in road safety, and now reaches a third of all year 11 students  - or about 50,000 students in NSW to date.

To raise funds for this vitally important programme, the Rotary Club of Manly has organised an appraisal day for art, antiques, collectables and jewellery.

Experts from Lawson-Menzies Auction House, Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants and jeweller Kenneth Goldthorp will be on hand to answer the age-old question “And what is it really worth?”

Date: Saturday, 14 July
Time: 10 am – 2 pm
Venue: Manly Village Public School, Assembly Hall, Darley Road.
Cost: $ 10 per appraisal

Refreshments will be available, with all proceeds from the day going to RYDA.

About  RYDA
The Program targets “awareness” and “attitudinal change” and seeks to encourage young people, year 11 students, who are on the verge of driving or at least who are actively thinking about it, to take a more responsible attitude to motoring. The inclusion of passenger empowerment (and not driver strategies alone) is an example of the broad approach to the course content. Comprising six sessions, it is a one-day event held at a non-school site. It co-ordinates the efforts of local road safety experts, driving instructors, the Police, recovering victims of road crashes, drug and alcohol educators and financial services personnel in such a way that students are made aware of the privilege and responsibilities of owning and driving a motor vehicle. Just like the Antiques Roadshow: The Framing Workshop of Mosman and Banziger Hulme Fine Art offer free art appraisals

Would you like to speak with the art experts and ask them your questions regarding your treasured work? Everyone is most welcome to bring in a work or a photo  at the Framing Workshop - whether you would like to know the value, have questions regarding framing or whether you are looking to sell a work.
For the first time, Richard Ussher and Banziger Hulme Fine Art join forces to offer free appraisals on artworks:

On:                  Saturday, 30 June 2007

From:             10 am to 2 pm

At:                   Framing Workshop, Suite 2, Gunshot Alley, Suakin Drive, Mosman.

There is ample parking available next to the framing studio.

The art appraisal day covers all Australian and international works of art, including oil paintings, watercolours, limited edition prints, etchings or photographs. If a work is too big to bring in, good photographs will be welcome as well.

One of our recent exciting finds from a valuation day were two pencil drawings which were thought to be by Australian impressionist Frederick McCubbin. After conservation work, they revealed the signature of John Constable and have now been attributed to this most famous British artist.
